The first step in the process of developing a sound basis for safety for combustible dust mitigation is to develop a comprehensive understanding of the materials being handled.  Every dust is unique and every explosion involving them is unique.  Dust testing is critical to defining the risks associated with a given dust.

There are numerous tests that can be conducted to characterize the behavior and associated risk for combustible dusts. CV Technology provides a full range of these dust tests including:

  • Dust Combustibility Testing – a basic screening test to determine if a material is a combustible dust.
  • Dust Explosibility Testing – a test done in accordance with ASTM E-1226 protocol to determine the Kst and Pmax of a dust.  For more information about Kst and Pmax see our Dust Explosion Basics section.
  • Minimum Ignition Energy (MIE) Testing – testing to determine the minimum ignition energy required to ignite a given dust.
  • Minimum Explosible Concentration (MEC) Testing – the minimum concentration of a dust suspended in air that will support an explosion.
  • Minimum Auto Ignition Temperature (MAIT) Testing – testing of either dust in a pile or suspended in a cloud to determine what temperature will ignite the materials.

All of our dust explosion mitigation testing is performed in accordance with the applicable standards from the American Society for Testing and Material (ASTM),
National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and the International Standards Organization (ISO).
