A dust explosion is the rapid combustion of fine particles suspended in the air, often but not always in an enclosed location. Dust explosions can occur where any dispersed powdered combustible material is present in high enough concentrations in the atmosphere or other oxidizing gaseous medium such as oxygen. Usually, if the event is confined by an enclosure such as a building, room, vessel, or process equipment, the resulting pressure rise may cause an explosion. These five factors (oxygen, heat, fuel, dispersion, and confinement) are known as the “Dust Explosion Pentagon”. If one element of the pentagon is missing, an explosion cannot occur. CV Technology specializes in dust explosion prevention technology to ensure that your facility does not experience the devastating effects of an explosion of this kind.
As a factory owner, this might scare you: according to recent research conducted by the United States Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board (CSB), over 280 explosions and fires have resulted from the ignition of dusts or dust clouds in U.S. industrial plants over the last 25 years. These incidents have caused 119 fatalities and over 700 injuries as well as untold millions of dollars in damages. It is likely that there were at least 80 additional incidents that were not documented in the CSB study. These numbers are staggering and are the reason that dust explosion prevention in your factory is a necessary hazard to consider and mitigate.
Similarly, according to Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), since 1980, more than 130 workers have been killed and more than 780 injured in combustible dust explosions.
More recently, a research conducted by www.DustExplosionResearch.com in 2017 reveals that there was a total of 164 dust explosion incidents in North America with United States recording the highest – 34 (approximately 21%). Plus 61 injuries and 6 recorded fatalities. Food products accounted for the highest number of explosions, closely followed by wood products and then paper, metal and coal.
These statistics are scary. They call for serious attention. Dust explosion prevention needs to be implemented on a larger scale.
